Kitchen Reveal with Giani Countertop Kit Giveaway!!

December 1, 2014 by Abby Thome

{ This is a sponsored post with Giani Countertops.  We received our kit to transform our countertops.  A huge thank you to Giani for this collaboration! }

Finally we get to share with you all what we have been up to the past few weeks and we could not be more excited to show you our new kitchen!

Remember what we had to work with?

When Giani Countertops wanted to collaborate with us providing a kit to help us resurface our countertops we could not resist! Giani provided us the tools we needed to achieve and completely change our infamous orange counters.

This is a painting process to resemble to look of granite – layers upon layers of a painting application, finishing with a sealer that provides your countertops with a gorgeous gloss.  We chose to go for the marble look, not the granite look ( both achieved with different applications of the product ) and we could not be happier with the results! The best part? The entire process was so easy and completely fool-proof.  I watched the videos a few times on their website + did everything all on my own!

You should follow Giani on their social media outlets too to see all of the transformations!

I did the entire kitchen by myself while Dan was at work over the course of two weeks and the countertops were the easiest and fastest part of all.  We chose the white diamond kit to try something new, seeing as our old kitchen had black concrete countertops (again DIY).   Everyone who comes over cannot believe these were resurfaced, everyone assumes we bought brand new countertops.  I cannot rave enough about Giani Countertops… we are truly smitten with this product!

The cabinets were painted, hardware spray painted a glossy black and the walls even received a new coat of paint.

(I’ll update you all on the color choices we made later this week!)

Ready to see the before and after?!

Can you even handle it?! We chose to do a darker base for the bottom cabinets and white for the top to open up the space a bit more.  It was SO dark and spooky before and the White Diamond Giani Countertops just pulled this entire vision together in the simplest most beautiful way ever!

IMG_2314

It is amazing what you can do on a small (and I mean small) budget.  Giani Countertop kits are only $79.95 – so to think you could completely transform your countertops for under $80 is just bananas! We got a quote for new laminate countertops to be installed and it was $1,000 – FOR LAMINATE AGAIN.  This product really saved us and gave us exactly the look we were going for!

IMG_2315

Of course my favorite pictures followed us from our old house and found their way to our kitchen.  Farm life dreamin’

IMG_2312

The sealer was the final step (2 coats) and gave the countertops the perfect shine to them.

IMG_2321

IMG_2323

We added our favorite DIY SHELVING again in our kitchen too.  Decked out with my favorite cook books (seriously, My Drunk Kitchen is off the chain – I love Hannah Hart) and a few Holiday inspired items.  I am loving having the salt and sugar in arms reach!

IMG_2014

IMG_2326

The entire space feels so much more open – the flow from room to room now is smooth as butter and this kitchen no longer stops you in your tracks for the wrong reasons! Minus the dishwasher – ha.  Cannot wait to replace that.

Would you love to fix ugly countertops in your home? Kitchen or bathroom? Well well well, it is your lucky day!

Hey Abby! I have been stalking your blog anxiously awaiting the kitchen transformation update since my husband and I are in the same boat of trying to update our very dated kitchen (think knotty pine cabinets + nasty yellow laminate. Its a real showstopper of a kitchen! Ha!) and have been researching different resurfacing kits, and I am positively blown away by Giani after seeing your pics! I’m also super inspired and encouraged after reading that you did it on your own since my hubby is balancing work and school so this stay at home mom is trying to tackle as many projects on my own as possible while my kiddo is napping. Much like you, we are trying to transform our dark kitchen into something beautiful and bright (inspirations: young house love and now….yours! 🙂
We were initially thinking a darker finish for the countertops, but I am now obsessed with the white diamond finish after seeing your photos! Your kitchen is simply beautiful and I am enjoying seeing the transformation of each room of your home!

So, I’ve been eyeing these kits. Giani has a great pic if the sand color countertop on their Facebook page. That’s what is want to duplicate 🙂

When we bought our villa 7 years ago, it had pink kitchen counters and I vowed it would be the first thing I would change. Well, 7 years later we are still living with them. I had looked into the Rustoleum refinishing kit, but it just looked too messy and complicated and I wasn’t sold on the finished product. After seeing the countertops refinished with the Giani kits and researching how easy it is to use, this is definitely the way to go. Since we have light wood cabinets and black appliances in our kitchen, I would love to do the countertops in Bombay black!

    • Abby Thome says

      December 3, 2014 at 4:16 pm

    • Abby Thome says

      December 3, 2014 at 4:14 pm

Hi Julie! Thank You! We are just at the two week threshold that you need to wait after the sealer to start using heavier items on the countertops. So far, fantastic! Of course we do not put direct heat on them, we’ve been using pot holders and water is just fine! We are loving their durability! Especially with two kids!

I am going to paint my cabinets a dark grey and want to use the white diamonds countertop paint. I would like to vein them to look like marble. A friend suggested using a feather instead of a brush. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks

        • Abby Thome says

          December 6, 2014 at 10:04 pm

Hi Julie! Honestly the brush worked great! You end up using the sponge provided to tap the paint and fade the line out – the more you tap the more it fades. I do know that they say to use particular tools for a reason – some other tools may leave lint and stuff sticking behind. I love grey cabinets though! Goodluck!

I love how you did the marble look, it is amazing how many different looks you can get with s kit. I did my own counters in white diamond with a granite look and I love them. Great job!

When we bought our home in 2004, the first thing I knew I would do was a kitchen remodel — I HATED the ugly sea foam green speckled Corian counters! Fast forward 10 years and guess what has taken a back burner to life… my kitchen remodel 🙁

Well, Giani gives me renewed hope that I will have the kitchen of my dreams without the HUGE price tag. We just had to replace all our appliances, which were 10-15 years old and dying, and the new, beautiful stainless steel French door fridge, wall oven, wall microwave/convection oven, and dishwasher will be delivered next week! I am so excited! Because my kitchen has a massive amount of counter space, including a built-in desk, and I want to get quite creative using many different painting techniques with the Giani system to achieve the look of natural, flowing stone (veining, water, sponging using bags, etc.), I will first be tackling the cultured marble counter top in one of our small bathrooms. Eventually, I plan on doing the counters and cabinets in all 4 bathrooms as well as the cabinets in the laundry room and hallway (using the NuVo system). I am not exactly sure which granite counter color kit I am going to use in my kitchen yet, but I am thinking it will most likely be the chocolate brown with some extra colors from other kits added in…. stayed tuned!!! Eek 🙂

Wow! You have inspired me, woman! I have a 1954 built house with a basic upgrade kitchen in 2005–all beige laminate cabs and breakfast nook with a honey wood trim. I need to freshen it up and this seems like a good solution. I guess if I win the prize I want the Sand Kit.Tell me: did you remove the kitchen sink or paint around it?

    • Abby Thome says

      December 6, 2014 at 10:01 pm

Hi Katy! Good question – we wanted to remove it ( I did concrete countertops at our first house and regretted not taking it out) well, long story short we ended up not doing it again and we laid painters tape across the edge and 1/4 inch onto the countertop as well, used a straight edge razor to slice off the excess and it covered the sink perfectly!! Honestly, the painting process was so easy, and it went straight to the base of the sink. I have very few spots of paint to scrape off! We were amazed!

  121. Lauren St. Clair says

    December 6, 2014 at 5:02 pm

We have HORRIBLE faux wood laminate countertops that are from the 1950s ( if not earlier!), if this works on these then I proclaim a miracle. Our cabinets are pretty darn awful as well, we painted them with regular paint 2 years ago and they are already not looking so hot…yuck.

I desperately need to update our kitchen counter tops. They are currently a greenish-blue with white splatter marks. They are laminate and look like some from the 70’s. This is how they were when we bought the house 10 years ago. We simply cannot afford new counter tops. PLEASE, PLEASE, consider me for the FREE Giani Countertop Paint Kit! I would be happy to post before, during and after photos. ☺

Hello Sharon! I am so sorry, but the contest ended months and months ago. We love Giani and keep checking back to see if we do another giveaway!

The counter tops look great!!! If the dishwasher still works well then don’t replace it just recover it. You can make the dishwasher stainless still look with the stainless still contact paper that is out now and they have black paint to do on the rest of the white. This would give the stainless still/black look. Or paint the front with chalkboard paint and the other white parts shinny black. Then you can write if the dishes have been washed or a grocery list or any thing.
