Chalkworthy

June 5, 2015 by Abby Thome

Chalkworthy

This is not a sponsored post.  I worked with Giani Granite on a collaboration this past year when we refinished our kitchen countertops.  Since then, we have been lucky enough to form a great relationship with this amazing company and we could not be more excited for what they have to offer.

Their newest product, Chalkworthy , which might as well be called drool-worthy.  It is amazing! I nearly jumped through my ceiling when I saw the page launch.  An amazing antiquing paint to be used on both indoor and outdoor pieces, the options are endless! A thick, (Very) low VOC paint with a matte finish, can be paired with the wax of your choice.  The colors are just gorgeous.  Really, I do not think I could dream up a better launch line up.  I love a company that is constantly evolving and coming up with amazing DIY products for their clients.

(Insert major virtual high five here!!)

Look at these colors! If you guys have a garage sale find this summer to tackle, turn to Chalkworthy!

We Bought A Jungle : Phase 2

June 3, 2015 by Abby Thome

We Bought A Jungle : Phase 2

We have lived in this house for a little over a year.  More than 365 days, and the equivalent amount of complaints rolling off of our tongues about our backyard.  You see, we were SO naive when we purchased this home.  We were so smitten with the mature trees that covered our backyard.  I am fairly certain I called it dreamy, and could not wait to have picnics in the shade of summer.  It only took the month of June to get an idea of what life was to be like outside in this backyard …..

unnamed-27-1

It was sheer insanity!

The bugs.  The mud from lack of sunshine.  The grass hardly grew.  Weeds EVERYWHERE.  Rocks to trip over every step you took.

Brody + Owen would go out to play and the fun would last 3 minutes until we were questioning if what they were running on was poison ivy.  I found that the deck stairs were the safest bet for avoiding spiders, I really did not expect our scenic yard to turn into such a nightmare.  We finished off the summer playing in the driveway mostly.  The boys would golf and ride their trucks in the back yard, but lack of  “clear ” room and safety kept them at bay most of the time.

You can read all about it HERE – and our wild and hysterical process of chopping down the majority of our trees in our back yard HERE.  Fast forward to a month ago when we finally took to the plunge to hire someone to “complete” our backyard.  As much as we wanted to be true DIY’ ers and do it ourselves, the time committment would have rolled us far into the summer months, leaving us little time to enjoy the finished product.  What would have taken us weekends upon weekends to complete was stripped and seeded in two days.  You can read more about that HERE

As you can see, our yard came a long way.  And what seems to be a complete step backwards in the green zone….

IMG_3505-1024x682

This definitely bummed me out a bit.  As excited as I was to see the grass grow, I was a bit nervous at the same time that we would regret taking down so many trees.  Like getting plastic surgery and waking up thinking “What the hell did I just do!?”

Thankfully, our landscapers pulled out all the stops and here we are with grass growing, kids and a new fur ball running around it and we could not be happier about the progress it has made!

IMG_3669

IMG_3670

I laugh out loud at our ridiculously landscaped dead tree.  It is like a giant target reminding us we forgot to chop down the biggest tree lacking every drop of life.

IMG_3677

We are still rocking our satellite dish in our backyard like a couple of red necks, but until we chop down two more trees in the front yard ($2,300 worth) this yard ornament will work just fine!

IMG_3671

The guys so kindly repurposed the mulch from our front yard and put in under our giant pine trees in the back.  Landscapers after this girls heart.

If you are wondering what the heck we did with all of that wood we chopped? Oy.  We still have SO much more to go shoved in a pile in the corner of our yard, while the rest that Dan and friends got to is stacked nicely in these new firewood holders Dan, his dad and brother-in-law built.

IMG_3673

There are no words for how great it is to have grass! And sunlight! Oh the sunlight you guys!!

IMG_3678

Today was Brody’s last day of school, and I think this summer will shape up to be the best one yet!

S’mores anyone?

# 1 m&m cookies

June 1, 2015 by Abby Thome

# 1 m&m cookies

Oy Vey.  You guys I have been struck with an awful stomach flu that has left me a couch potato, or should I say toilet potato –  since Friday morning.  I am on day four and am so thankful that I can now actually walk more than 2 feet without feeling like I am to weak to go further, but the symptoms are still there and my stomach is longing for food.  I have an appointment in an hour so I am just hoping they’ll be able to give me something to help these symptoms subside! Mama has got two rugrats and a new furr baby to take care of!

Not being able to eat can make you absolutely long for food.  I do not know how people on Naked and Afraid do it.  It should be called Naked and Starving.  I was able to treat myself to a 1/4 cup white rice last night folks, and it took every ounce of my imagination to dream it up to be something else.  As soon as I am functioning again this chic is whipping up the fattest lasagna North East Ohio has ever seen.  Just. For. Me.

In the meantime, I wanted to share with you all one of my favorite copy-cat recipes!

Jenny from Picky Palate is a girl after my own heart.  I love her blog and when I found this recipe for the perfect m&m cookies I had to give them a try.  You may now take a minute to throw away any other chocolate chip cookie recipe you have and use this one has your holy grail cookie recipe.

IMG_3633

Just look at that dough!

I have made a batch (or 2) of these cookies every single week since we’ve been introduced.  Yes, the cookies and I are that close now.  I know what you’re thinking, with all the m&m cookie recipes out there what makes this particular one the king of all cookies? It’s the Jello ya’ll!

Yes, you read that right.  Vanilla instant Jello pudding mix is put into this cookie dough and it makes every ounce of a difference.  Crispy on the outside and beyond soft and chewy in the middle, they always leave guests asking how I make them.  Thank you Jenny, I owe you.

IMG_3637

I have made this recipe without the mini m&m’s and only with chocolate chips, and while they are lacking color they do not lack flavor.  So do not fret if you cannot find the mini m&m’s at the store (pst. I find mine at Target)

I double the recipe every single time.  Brody likes to help right down the original off of the computer as we go, such a cutie he is.

IMG_3643

Look at these babies all baked to perfection …..

You can find the recipe HERE on her BLOG 🙂

A Bangin’ Price for 2 Bookshelves.

May 28, 2015 by Abby Thome

A Bangin’ Price for 2 Bookshelves.

I have mentioned here time and time again about how I long for built ins along the front of our family room.  Our family room is large and in charge and we have gorgeous built ins with a window seat in the back.

You can see HERE how butt naked the wall felt.  Poor baby wall.  And entire year of us telling it it was only a matter of time until it filled out.  Just like my doctor growing up, telling me my chest would fill out –  it never did.  I had to give this will a chance.

Kohls had my back and I could not be more thrilled! A few weeks ago I found these tiered metal and wood bookcases that caught my eye.

1938156_ALT

You can find them online if your store is out! Look  HERE

So I checked them out, started crushin’ and quickly walked away before I was completely head over heels.  Originally $249, marked down to $99, holy canoli!! Such a great deal!

My ability to say no when shopping is slowing getting stronger with each “Oh no you didn’t” from Dan.  Think before you swipe.  Think before you swipe.  That’s how the story goes.  I was back at Kohls a few days later, feeling sneaky … but I had a 30% off coupon if I used my Kohls charge, and really, come on, that’s practically getting them for free.  Dan would have to approve.

I flag down the shelf, make sure there were still two left, stared at the sticker and wipe my eyes.  $74.99!!! My think before you swipe mentality totally paid off! These shelves were reduced again, and I was able to snag two of them for just over $45 a piece! I am not good at math so I refuse to give myself a headache to give you the exact dollar amount! (Ha.  Ever see friends with benefits?  Justin Timberlake + Mila Kunis are hysterical in this movie.  Justins character is awful at math and at one point he trys to gage the height of a fence by saying “I’m 6ft tall, that fence looks like three of me so…. 52. ” That is me guys.)

Back to the new book shelf!  Here is a picture of our bare naked wall.

IMG_3385-1024x682

It almost looks like the pieces are floating.  Woo-wee did it need some help!

Drum roll please ….

IMG_3662

Are they beautiful or what?! If I had endless pockets I would have many more items to dress them up more, but for now they add so much to the space!

IMG_3666

IMG_3665

I love having mix and match pieces in here.  After putting these together (which by the way, are super easy to assemble) I was SO glad we did not build huge built ins here.  I think they would have battled with the other ones across the room and it would have closed our room in a ton!

IMG_3664

The decor thus far is super simple.  A Crate of crayons for the kiddos.  Large salad bowls I could not fit anywhere else in the house, a succulent, wicker basket and two outdoor lanterns I could not pass up!

IMG_3667

This pretty baby has more nautical decor – keeping it fresh for summer.

IMG_3661

It is amazing what two small pieces can do to a space.    Even more, stepping outside of the matchy-matchy habit and going for a more eclectic look.  Look for deals you guys! Cheaper does not mean uglier.  All together for our painted dresser (you can see the transformation HERE) and the two bookshelves were less than $150 total!!

Summer Swag for your Diaper Bag!

May 27, 2015 by Abby Thome

Summer Swag for your Diaper Bag!

(This is a sponsored post with Whole Foods.  Your giveaway is a gift from them and I was able to try the same amazing products too! Thanks Whole Foods!)

I’d like to start this saying “Calling all moms!” but this giveaway is so amazing I think any girl out there would love to have these items in their purse or diaper bag! I have yet to mention to you that I was chosen to work with Whole Foods and collaborate on blog posts! I am over the moon about this partnership, Whole Foods has always been a dream of mine to work with!

School is days away from being over with and I am super excited and somewhat dreading summer vacation all wrapped into one.  I LOVE having the kids home with me, of course.  But – the days are long and sometimes I am not enough to keep them 100% occupied from 6am – 7pm with NO, yes NO naps! I tend to plan activities outside.  Whether it be a playdate with friends, or a visit to the park, I am constantly making sure we have something to look forward to (preferably free) that can break up our day and get some energy out of the boys.

The days of the diaper bag are behind me for now, but I still make sure to carry a large tote bag with me at all times.  Just because they are out of diapers does not mean that I do not need to pack things for them.  From wipes to inhalers, band aids to snacks, I try my best to always be prepared.  There are bound to be growling bellies, ouchies and filthy hands that need tended too.

That’s where this giveaway comes in! Whole Foods so graciously partnered with me to giveaway some amazing products to have on hand for you and your youngsters this summer!

IMG_3652

These special products are the perfect size for your purse or diaper bag and you will be glad you have them on hand this summer!

Sunscreen is a must, every day clouds or sun in the sky.  Nothing is worse than running into a girlfriend at target and you have coffee breath, so mints are a no brainer.  Baby fix-it is an organic stick for those random ouchies, follows a box of band aids to ease their worries.  Snacks! Love a bar that is packed with wholesome ingredients for myself or the littles! Chapstick – we go through chapstick like it is going out of style.  And last but not least, my favorite thing to have on hand – hand sanitizer! I am a germ freak, and my frequent use of hand sanitzer often leads me to super dry hands.  This lavender hand sanitizer is moisturizer and I love it for that!

swag

How would you like to have this swag in your bag?!

How about we sweeten the deal with a $25 Whole Foods gift card too!!

Alright folks, here is how you do it!

You must do all three steps to qualify to win the swag bag and the Whole Foods gift card!

1. Leave a comment, telling me what you cannot leave the house without!

2. Follow me on Pinterest HERE

3. Like our page on Facebook HERE

That is it! Easy! Goodluck everyone, I will be keeping a detailed tab on your entries and winner will be drawn at random!

Meet Duke!

May 26, 2015 by Abby Thome

Meet Duke!

Impulse decisions are the way we work best here in the Thome home.  Over thinking leads to second guessing, impending deferment and subsequent squashing of a great idea.  My chicken coop dreams were swooped away when our city gave us a “Um …. hm. I do not know if that is allowed, by 2016 yes, for sure, but for now, um.. .. let me contact someone for you” Over and over again.  That ship sailed so quickly.  I was not heartbroken, lets not get hung up over baby chicks.  Don’t count your chickens before they hatch, right?

But you know what you can count on?!

An enticing newspaper ad, followed by an adorable picture on a breeders website.  Oh boy.  They got us good.  Dan was born and raised with German Shepherds.  To me, they are amazingly obedient, well-tempered and overall a great dog.  Back in the day, until I learning about them more, they intimidated me.  They can grow to be massive!  On my five foot some odd inches frame,  I feel like a tiny pup would suite my training skills in puppy land, not one that will power over me.

Hours after making a phone call we found ourselves in the car driving to our surprise destination.  We did not tell the boys where we were going, we did not want to get their hopes up.  Owen has been steadily growing out of many of his allergies, so checking dogs off the list was next.  This was to be our meet and greet, a test to see if we should knock the dream of having a family dog off the list while we were at it.  Disappointment is surely easier to handle when it comes in a steady stream 🙂

unnamed-57

Many licks on the face and 30 minutes later we had a non-itchy owen and a massive 11 week old pup in our car for the ride home.  Oh, I love when things happen this way.  Just going with the flow, you only live once, in the moment decisions.  We are well aware of what is to be ahead of us, we’ve had 3 beyond restless nights that have me foggy brained and sleepy.  But this sweet boy has filled up our hearts already and we are so glad to introduce him to all of you!

Meet Duke!

unnamed-60

His paws are huge.  His temperament is as sweet as a button and his nights are full of pooping and peeing in his cage crying for his new mom and dad.  I have gone through piles of paper towels and clorox wipes.  Endless sanitizing of the floor.  Rolled up expensive carpets and set them away, trading my home decor for my sanity.  He already sits for us, has learned to use stairs and cuddles our shoulders when he is held.  Though he may already be 1/2 my size when I hold him, I will squeeze up any chance I get before he ends up like his 125 pound dad! Wowzer.

What are we in for?!

unnamed-58The boys adore him.  Taken back at times by his size at first when he was jumping on them.  Thankfully, they quickly came to a halt.  He learned so very quickly not to jump and has kept the kids giggling and excited to help take care of him (for now).

unnamed-62

So happy that Owen is growing out of his allergies.  Even more thrilled that our boys will be raised with animals around.  Now we have another addition to our family that will be sure to be by our side for years to come.

I’ve always wanted a house packed to the brim!

My Dream Patio with Wayfair!

May 22, 2015 by Abby Thome

My Dream Patio with Wayfair!

(this is a sponsored post.  compensation in form of a gift card.  thank you for your support!)

My

Being a Wayfair Homemaker really is such a delight.  Already prior to having a title my online gazing/shopping habits were one of my strong suites.  I have always had a dreamer mentality when it comes to decor.  There are two things that exist in the home decor world.  Items we can afford, and the others that we dream about.

It has only been a year since we moved into our house, we have shown you what the yard originally looked like here, and what we turned it into during our tree demolition here, and most recently, what I like to call our grass transplant you can read more about here.  It has been such a nightmare, has taken up a ton of our free time and finally we got our wit about us and hired help for the end.  At this very moment we have two inches of grass, some areas more well endowed than others, but the sign of sweet backyard summertime hang outs are right around the corner!

Let us fantasize together, shall we? Picture your perfect patio.  The essential environment to host dinners, have lunch outside with your kiddos, and stay up under the lights with a cocktail in hand and good friends.  This does not have to be a dream when you have Wayfair on your side.

Here are my favorite picks that I would just do the jig if I could day dream these into my backyard right at this very moment.  My perfect patio picks and a few yard additions to really turn our house into the place to be this summer.

patio # 1

My ultimate patio has a main star, the table.  Nothing beats a lovely group of friends and family gathered around a large table, drinking cocktails and handfuls of delicious eats.  Large pillows to give the seats a bit more comfort, and a gorgeous rug to bring the inside to the outdoors.

patio # 2

I love having plenty of pieces to customize my dining experience.  You cannot go wrong with faux succulents, zero maintenance with all the wow factor.  Copper mugs and bee glasses will be just darling for guests to sip away their chosen beverage.  I’m telling you, a few special additions can raise your table decor to an entire new level.

patio # 3

This bar cart is just divine.  I would love to put this directly under our bay window outside.  Dress it up with a few herbs to add to cocktails.  Pile on pretty napkins, bowls with lemon and lime wedges and two small buckets on the bottom with wine chilling.  Come on, have mercy.

We have two trees that are just aching for a hammock to be draped from its branches.  I love the thought of a patio party dripping out into the backyard.  Kids and adults together enjoying the atmosphere.

patio # 4

The piece that will keep all the adults happy, a play set.  I nearly fainted when I stumbled across this white wood set.  I can just see it nestled into the back of our green grass yard, where all of the kids will keep themselves busy for hours while the parents enjoy each others company.

Picking each individual piece out for my dream patio really has me over the moon for the potential our patio and backyard have.

Do you guys do this too? Constant dreaming of what could be? Isn’t it nice to know that you can make it happen with Wayfair!?

  • 1    chair
  • 2   table

  • 6   copper mugs
  • 7   glasses

Kale Chips

May 20, 2015 by Abby Thome

Kale Chips

If you’re thinking, what the KALE Abby?! Kale chips are so 2014, that ship has sailed.

I will so graciously reply with, Oh KALE no! Let us not let this ship, or should I say chip sail and keep this tasty trend rolling.

IMG_3605

If you want to be a powerhouse in the kitchen and really impress yourself, you can take the time to remove the rib of the kale with kitchen scissors and tear the kale into bite size pieces.  If you have better things to do with your time, like me, run straight for the bag of cut and cleaned kale.  Already washed, dried and waiting for your tender touch.

IMG_3611

There will be a few stalks in the bag, you can’t expect everything to be perfect ya’ll.  Just pull them out and toss them aside.  In a large bowl, mix a few tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and toss the kale with your hands, give it a good old fashion rub down.   Once all the pieces are coated, toss them onto a baking sheet that is prepped with parchment paper.  Follow with a sprinkle of sea salt. If you do not have sea salt, get over it and grab kosher salt, I won’t tell.

IMG_3615

Once your kale is in a nice layer (it took two baking sheets for me for one 10oz bag) slide those healthy hotties into the oven at 275* for 20-30 minutes, or until crispy.

This is where I was blown to bits.  I imagined crispy like a potato chip – it is nothing like that.  These kale chips baked into a ruffled, airy, flaky masterpiece that melts on your tongue.  It is amazing.

IMG_3620

This process was so simple and so satisfying.  As I type this I am sitting with that bowl right next to me and have zero guilt stuffing my face with these gorgeous greens.

Since many cancers run in my family, and my sweet momma had a rough run with colon cancer a bit ago I am willing to try anything that will benefit my body.  My doctor said leafy greens are what I need to maintain to prevent colon cancer, so really, in hindsight, these kale chips may save my ass.

Curious what is so good about this trendy veggie?

Refinish your GROUT!

May 18, 2015 by Abby Thome

Refinish your GROUT!

This is NOT a sponsored post, simply me raving about a product I wish I would have used a year ago when we bought this place!

The first step into our front doors were quickly followed by an “ew”.  Exactly like Jimmy Fallon would say as Sara …

There was orange tile staring back at us the second our eyes were able to turn from the hideous red trim.  Every corner we turned on the first floor we were hoping it would end in the foyer.  It followed us into the kitchen, lucky us, the laundry room, oh, and the 1/2 bath.

IMG_0089-768x1024

The “EW!” factor was real – and the price factor for what it would be to take it out and replace it with hardwoods was not an option.  Day in and day out I spent hours trying to keep this grout tile clean.  We pulled out the stove one day to clean underneath it and that is when we saw what the cleaner grout was capable of looking like.

Toothbrushes, tens of cleaners and hours of wasted time later I was left with the same filthy grout.  Inspired by the one and only YoungHouseLove, who have retired in the blogging world (insert sad face) Sheri painted the tile grout in their foyer and the difference was jaw dropping.

The product is PolyBlend Grout Renew, I ran my stubby legs to Home Depot SO fast to pick it up! We chose platinum for the color.  Fair warning, this takes time, plenty of it.  Obviously having little ones running around in circles did not help me move as swiftly as I intended, but about 10 hours of time later split up in a few day period, I was done and completely doing the happy dance.

IMG_0100-768x1024-1

IMG_3585

Can you believe that is even the same corner in our foyer?! I know the color is light, it is a light gray shade.  It is bound to get dirty, but let me tell you I would rather paint these lines once a year than waste all of the hours I did in the past cleaning them again!

The process is tedious yet therapeutic all in one swoop.  You literally, using an artist brush, paint on each individual line.  Wiping away the edging for a perfectly straight look and moving onto the next.  I found a 2 line max allowing me enough time to wipe off the excess without it drying, which than requires some scraping with your finger nail.

IMG_3575

Our bathroom prior to the new grout.

IMG_3589

It feels SO clean now! My tips for using this PolyBlend Grout Renew are as follows ….

Block off sections at a time, do not over do it.  Leave the space you need to walk around your house with ease and not playing “don’t step on the crack!” I lost it a few times when Olive Oil smeared paint all over our kitchen!  Paint in 2 line increments, wiping with toilet paper using your finger.  Last but not least, let it cure for a few hours before prancing all over it! It says 24 hours on the bottle, with this heat and humidity within 6 or so hours it was dry to the touch.

IMG_3588

IMG_0089-768x1024Let’s do another before and after for a grander reveal!

Best Advice.

May 13, 2015 by Abby Thome

Best Advice.

Being told to expect something is completely different from the actual understanding of going through that very scenario.  Every “parent to be” can ramble off the endless lines of advice they heard from friends and loved ones.  The fair warnings of sleepless nights, tips and tricks on nursing and proper burping techniques.  How to manage bringing another baby home while you are still chasing around a toddler.  Oh, those nasty never-ending ear infections and the signs you should always keep an eye out for.  How to raise a well-mannered child.  Confident, yet sweet.  Athletic and educated.  Bold yet thoughtful.

These tips and tricks get tangled into a giant web by day 1, scratch that, minute one of becoming a parent.

unnamed-51

I was a girl who dreamed of being a mom.  When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up if an actress was not my first answer, a mother was quick to follow.  I wanted all of the babies I could have.  It was much to my surprise that our first bundle of joy was to arrive prior to an engagement ring.  Long before we had our careers set up and far before we were ready to purchase our first house.  I think many friends and family were far more concerned with seeing us “get it together” than how we would do raising our first-born.  We were so very lucky for that.  Dan and I were left to just figure it out.  Very little advice and direction came our way.  It was exactly how we needed it to be.

Fast forward to baby # 2 – Owen.  As a second time mommy, a seasoned veteran to this whole mommy thing, I had friends and family who had been around the bases now too.  It was so nice to have a group of women to turn to during those endless days of nothing going right.  When doctors visits filled our calendars, tricks on how to remember antibiotic schedules and playdates packed with caffeine kept me balanced and happy.  When before I thought it was so very nice to figure it all out myself, I found myself needing that support of fellow mothers.

The cocky attitude of “I’ve got this” subsided quickly as the days went on.  Who the hell cares if I’ve got things under control.  If one kid was running around with poop in his pants while the other one just stole a toy from another kid at a play date.  You know what always happens? A friend, fellow mommy swoops in to save the day.

This is the most elite group to belong to … one that is over flowing with people who care to help.

The Mom’s club.

When you have friends who are mothers themselves, or care just as deeply about your kids, there is this special bond that spreads like wild-fire.  I may change the dirty diaper, while my girlfriend will calm the cry of the toy burglars.

Of all of the advice I have been given over the past 6 years, the ONLY piece I have to say that has lasted this entire time, tried and true.

Have a community.

A tightly knit community of friends/family that you know you can turn too.  They will lift you up, not judge you and tear you down.  They will bring positivity into your life and your children’s too.  Play dates have dwindled down to far and few lately.  With school schedules and sports and all.  But, the texts, the phone calls … they keep coming back and forth.   Keep those that do that close mamas!

Nothing compares to having fellow moms that have your back.

unnamed-50

I hope all of you guys had a really special mothers day this past weekend! These boys keep me on my toes and I am forever grateful for the friends and family I have had by my side over the past 6 years.

xoxo abby
