My Valentines Day Gift Guide + a Fatty Sundays Giveaway!!

Attention to all of those who are looking for a gift for a special lady in their life.  While I am completely biased because these ideas stream directly from my pinterest … I have always said the way to a womans heart is through pinterest – not really, but lets roll with it.

If I am going to keep things an open book here – I would have to share with you all that Dan and I have not exchanged Valentines Day gifts since before our wedding.  We’ve been together for nearly 11 years and all I ever want is a card, a sweet note, or good ol’ fashion roll in the hay to make the day extra special.  Gifts are not always necessary. I will say that this year, it wouldn’t hurt to treat ourselves to something on our wish list.  We spent the entire year putting so many other things first that it would be a real treat to give one another something special.

Dan – if you haven’t gotten the idea yet, here you go.

[I will be making one for Dan to share with you all this week too, men need a little lovin’ too.]

I have to say, these pieces are great ideas for any lady – there are many of gifts in this guide a girl would gleefully accept!

Fatty Sundays.

[this is a sponsored post….  I received Fatty Sundays pretzels to try and they blew. my. mind.  all opinions are of my own – thanks for the pretzels Fatty Sundays!]

unnamed

Most girls run from the word “Fatty” –

I however, run towards it.  Give me the good stuff.  The melt in your mouth – cannot wait until desert – get your paws off of those treats – I will eat all of the left overs kind of good stuff.

Fatty Sundays is a delicious business led by sisters who have a passion for chocolate covered pretzels.  Hello ladies, can I be your best friend?!

Not only do I admire the girls (Ali + Lauren) for following what started as an idea inspired by their childhood , they turned it into an amazing product! Their wit and humor is right up my alley.  You must follow them on Instagram  + Facebook, it will brighten your day!

I first fell in love with Fatty Sundays through Happy Mommy Box, which you all know I have talked about often.  I took one bite, two bites … and wanted more.  I counted down the days until my next shipment arrived and when it did it was painfully difficult to sit and photograph these pretzels without taking a bite.

I shared with Danny first, because any moment I can earn bonus points I will.  He walked back up the stairs to finish homework (back to college nerd) and moaned “these are so good”… From that point forward the amount of pretzels in my pictures started to dwindle and my mouth was full of love.

Pure silky chocolate, crunchy pretzel, amazing flavor love.  I felt like one of the 20+ girls on the Bachelor who got a rose.  I slipped some tounge, showed some enthusiasm and my mouth got the reward.

Fatty Sundays, you rock.  I do accept your pretzel.

Further more – these are not just your ordinary chocolate covered pretzels.  The flavors are intensely delicious + the options are endless.  Have a wedding you would like unforgettable favors for? Turn to these girls, you will have color coordinated favors! Birthdays, baby showers, midnight snacks, whatever the occasion – this is the answer.

They even have packages where you can make your own! Say what?! Hello mommas with kids who are dying to keep them occupied! Or ladies like me who need something to do on an off night of my reality television round-up – here is your answer!

I am so glad I bit into these pretzels, the quality is astounding and the flavors leave your taste buds weeping for more.

Here are the pretzels I tried!  ….

IMG_2865

Hello beautiful(s) – ha.  Come to mama.

IMG_2873

Every woman loves her chocolate – and after seeing my hubby dig into these, apparently men do too.  If you have had chocolate covered pretzels and just think of the ordinary, you have got to try these, they are truly extraordinary.

Had to hashtag.  I may be a momma, but I’m still with it.

IMG_2877

The white chocolate sprinkle pretzels balanced just enough sweetness with the salty pretzel.

IMG_2882

These orange cookie pretzels honestly knocked my socks off.  Peal an orange, dip it in chocolate with a pinch of salt and these pretzels have met their match.

IMG_2885

My favorite by far.  I got the final rose with this pretzel.  Toffee crunch, you had me at hello.  Sweet, salty, caramel undertones – holy canoli I honestly did not want to swallow.

IMG_2887

I cannot wait to try more of their flavors, and incorporate them into gifts this year!

IMG_2888

An amazing company with an even more amazing product – one bite, one little crunch and you will be begging for more Fatty Sundays!

Pancakes, Please.

January 29, 2015 by Abby Thome

Pancakes, Please.

IMG_2917

I will not claim to have the best pancake recipe – there are SO many out there, many that I have tried.  But, these very pancakes are earning points each and every single time we make them.  We make theses far more often than we should be admitting, but what can we say, we simply love breakfast foods!

This batch specifically makes 36 delicious pancakes.  In my opinion, if you are going to stand at the stove and flip away might as well make enough to last a few days.  An entire batch is cooled and put away in gallon size ziploc bags and we pull them out as needed throughout the week.  Making breakfast fast and filing!

IMG_2908

We switch things up and add chocolate chips or blueberries here and there, but keeping them as-is is always a winner in our books too!

IMG_2902

Vanilla soy milk is used in our house – for sweet Owens allergies – but you can use good ol’ cows milk and add 2 tsp of vanilla for a touch of sweetness.

I hold down the fort by standing at the stove the entire time.  There is a fine line between perfect pancakes and burnt pancakes.

Need to change a diaper? That turd can wait.

Just give yourself 15-20 minutes of time to keep an eye on these pancakes, because flipping them on time is the key.  My station is set with two frying pans – a paper towel (I’ll explain later) – two cooling racks and my favorite flipper.

IMG_2899

After countless pancake practicing –  this is my fool proof method.  You can see my pans are put on medium – low.  I spritz the pan with nonstick spray before each batch.  After the pancakes are taken out, I wipe the pan with a dry paper towel to soak up the old nonstick spray, re-spritzing again for the new batch.  I use a 1/3 measuring cup for each pour – and flip each pancake once there are bubbles bursting on top.

IMG_2894

A few minutes on each side and you are good to go! If putting chocolate chips or blueberries in, I plop them on right when I pour the batter onto the pan.

Like these tips? Or are they boring?

Here is the recipe regardless 🙂 Because they are rootin’ tootin’ good!

Pancakes, Please.

  3. Wet ingredients in the other.

  6. The batter will bubble + and look scrumptious.
  7. Set aside until your pans are ready for the batter to be poured!

Think he could resist? 4:00 pancake snack for the both of us 🙂

Fun fact of the day – googling flapjacks and urban dictionary’s top definition for “pancakes” are when a womans breasts are pushed up against glass.  Not sure if I agree.

I think the breast comparison –

(see what I did there? ha)

If your comparing boobs to pancakes it would be the aftermath of breastfeeding.

Agreed ladies? No glass needed.

Okay, enough boob and pancake comparison – start flippin’ your flapjacks folks.

Thought Provoking.

January 28, 2015 by Abby Thome

Thought Provoking.

Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday will always leave you thinking.  The phrase “thought-provoking” comes across time and time again when you watch this series.  It makes you think – without a doubt you can scan your entire life in the matter of a 60 minute segment.

[ side not:: If you get a chance to dvr the episode with Nate Berkus, jump on it.  What he has been through and how he chose to deal with it all is admirable.  I had no idea the story behind this amazing designer.  I have always loved his work, now I love him even more. ]

I am a thinker.  Digging deeper than the exterior of the situation – scoop up matter that you really do not want to see.  Face the facts, and figure it all out kind of girl.

The truth is though, that digging too deep can cause more trouble than just waiting.

Giving things time is key.

Listen, my life has been blessed.  I have gone through many of things – many of tests, that looking back I would think would have broken me down, or at least shaped me for the worse, not the better.  But after the sun set, I chose happiness.

I knew that through the ugliest of times – that the best was yet to come.  Now, just because I made it through those difficult times does not mean that I had dealt with those times.  Which is the hardest part of all.  Revisiting moments you’d like to forget –

I have always been taught to deal with things.  Thinking back, I always found reasons and excuses in believing why things happened the way they did.  When, in fact, I should let time pass and let the clock do the talking.

Because nothing will explain the past better than the future.

Each day will bring up particular moments, making you connect and understand why.  It will help you to come to a place where you see how things went wrong, or how things were made right.

I have learned over time that you must live your life in order to make sense of many things.

To stop digging for the explanation.  For the reason is often found through living through those very same experiences, and seeing how you chose to follow them through.

Our Entry Way.

January 27, 2015 by Abby Thome

Our Entry Way.

Walking in our home for the first time with our realtor was definitely a moment to remember.  We knew the house needed work – but for some reason, even with a few preview picture online – they did not do the space justice.

Oddly enough, this turned us on.  We see a nasty space, covered in paint colors we would never chose and our minds start racing with the very thought of erasing the damage.  Ever watch Fixer Upper on HGTV? We have been loving this show since the very first episode – Joanna is a home decor goddess, who has an eye for it all. And  Chip, well, I am married to a real life Chip myself so he really tickles my fancy.  I cannot help but hope that one day Dan and I will get the opportunity to fix up someone elses house for them.

DREAM #1 – Do it professionally.

(Following the write it down/say it out loud method.  Make it happen)

Speaking of inspiration, you should follow me on Pinterest! I am constantly pinning away my favorite looks! Scroll to the side of our page for the link to follow me 🙂

While Chip can get a little carried away with the project at hand (just as Dan) – always finding more to do and shooting for the stars, I much like Joanna, have an eye for what a space can be and get slap happy over the smallest of accomplishments.

I know that being “DIY” and fixing up houses is all the rage lately.  Seriously it seems as if everyone is doing it or wants to do it.  Every single show revolves around it – anyone sick of it? Not I, Dan and I like to claim that we were way ahead of the game in dorkville being obsessed with fixer uppers.  But, I think whether you are late to the game or just jumping on the crazy fad  you should embrace it.  A little elbow grease goes a long way and can save you SO much money! (If done correctly, ha.)

Back to our entry way.  We wanted an entry way that not only had a bit of breathing room for guests to get settled in, but a staircase located right in front of the door.  I just love that feeling of opening a door and seeing a bit of everything – I do not know why.

IMG_0089

This entry way hit it out of the park for us.  Ample closet space – room for decor + a staircase staring right back at us.  Our view from the front door for the first few weeks of renovation was much less than desirable, but we had to keep the end in sight.

IMG_0330I wish your computer screen had a scratch and sniff.  The smell in here was intoxicating.  We started by ripping up the carpet, to see what lied beneath.  Thankfully we found about 7 real wood stairs + the rest needed covering.  A complete overhaul was in order!

IMG_0100

IMG_0332Ha.  I love how my green tea lattes follow me where ever I go.  I have been doing SO good on giving them up — down to about 2 a week, which deserves a round of applause in my books.

So after numerous layers of paint, new stairs and some decor this entry way is one you would all love walking into!

See what I mean? I love that we rolled up our sleeves and embraced this house regardless of its appearance.  Gosh, if we all could get past the imperfections and give everything a bit of TLC there are so many more houses that could be swooped up.

Owen’s Room Reveal.

January 26, 2015 by Abby Thome

Owen’s Room Reveal.

The big brother – little brother effect is in full swing over here.  There are many of things I said that I would never do before I had kids.  99% of that went straight out the window the second that they were both born.  One of those items on my list of “Oh god please – I will never be one of those moms, dressing my children alike!”  I would see pictures of friends and family dressed in matching outfits – no matter the sex of the child.  It would make me squirm.  Now, here I am buying two of nearly everything, literally.

Great sweater on sale? I buy one for Owen + one for Brody.  Why not? If Owen looks adorable in it, he is in luck – he’ll have another one to wear a few years from now too.  This has spilled into their toys as well.  Double of everything please, or at least extremely similar.  They are best of buds, which also comes with a battle territory.   Future mommas of siblings – just get two.  Save yourself the drama.  Yes, I believe in sharing is caring – and teaching them to let things go nicely.  But they truly want to match – to be equal in a sense.

I knew this would continue to roll into their rooms.  Owen’s bedroom looks much like Brody’s.  Until we figure out what direction we are going into with in their rooms – we did not want to spend $$ only to see tears that either brother does not have what the other one does.

Oh brother is right.

Want to see Owen’s room before we got our hands on it?

IMG_0111

I could smack whoever painted the trim in the house – and I am not a violent person.  But mustard and ketchup is only good on burgers.  And this is coming from a girl whose husbands says to her “want some burger with that ketchup”  Love it on my meat, not on my trim.

IMG_0110

Same technique applied here – carpet removal, stain/odor sealant, fresh paint and decor added –

and here we are ….

IMG_2819

Same curtains, same rug, same wall decor – and you know what? They love it just as so.

IMG_2815

We need to get a bed frame for this munchkin + some wall decor.

IMG_2817

Keepin’ it real with these cubes.  I’m telling you – it’s impossiblet to keep them together.  Baskets are broken, woven baskets from the living room end up here – I do not care, so long as they clean it up!

Let the boys be boys.  ya know?

IMG_2818

The curtains make my heart skip a beat.  What do you think? Still trying to figure out the end goal here, but it will come! For now, two by two we will go.

Brody’s Room Reveal.

January 23, 2015 by Abby Thome

Brody’s Room Reveal.

So you know those questions I answered for you guys? Or at least I did and never posted it – turns out we have to pay extra $$ to post larger videos on this space.  blah.  Unless I upload them to YouTube … so watch out YouTube, this momma will be taking over this weekend – I’ll be re-doing the video and posting it there to link here.  In other words, it’s coming!

Yesterday I showed you guys some of the window treatments we recently purchased – you can read about it here.  Now here is the fun part, showing you the pictures!

I’ll start first with Brody’s room, which is a complete work in progress – trying to find the direction we want to go!

Remember Brody’s room before?

IMG_0112

The fabulous walls covered in teal and lavender.  The carpet that was so graciously peed and pooped on so many times you could hardly take a step without gagging.  It was a room made in nightmares.

IMG_3441

This room took a lot of prep work.  Ripping up the carpets, tac strips + sealing off the floors with an odor protector, in hopes of keeping the cat smell at bay.  Oh, to think about doing this and cursing out cats across america – and now here we are with Olive Oil.  So ridiculous.

New flooring, lighting, paint head to toe and a few pieces of decor …

IMG_2808

We know we are shooting for a red/white/blue theme here.  Obviously.  It works well with is love for Ohio State and the Blue Jackets.  Plus, keeps the room neutral enough we can change it as he grows! Can you believe the difference already? night and day!

IMG_2809

The curtains are from Wayfair.  We purchased the same ones for Owens room too!

IMG_2807

I love the addition of the stars on the wall from Pottery Barn Kids + the board in between to add his artwork to.   They are no longer available, but always check out the site – constantly adding amazing wall decor!

IMG_2811I’d say he is a pretty lucky boy – or at least we are lucky to have gotten this room from unlivable to a room any of us would be happy to hang in!

IMG_2812

I’ll be posting Owen’s room later this afternoon! So keep checking in!

Window Treatments

January 22, 2015 by Abby Thome

Window Treatments

For the wiiiindows, on our wall –

sorry, had to.

Even though we have less windows in this house than we did at our old house – dressing up our current windows seems to be a much greater task!

You see, in our old house we were totally satisfied with the majority of our windows being covered with $3 blinds, and a few roman shades here and there.  We made the classic selling mistake (aftermath) of leaving all window treatments with the new buyers, including the curtains we invested in a few rooms.  It really did help sell our house – nothing beats buying a house that already has window treatments, but it left us with starting at scratch in our new home.

Immediately upon moving in we had to make a decision as to what to cover our windows with.  We LOVE roman shades, but we wanted a window treatment that could be all the way down to the window sill, and still be opened or closed without having to be rolled up.

We found our solution at the one and only Home Depot  – the Home Decorators Collection Premium Faux Wood Blind, in white.

The width is 2 1/2 inches and these are easy to clean with a duster or even the correct vacuum attachment! It was a little over $50 a window – we purchased 14 to cover the living room, family room, dining room, all bedrooms + and office.

964da2af-9e84-480b-8d5a-759bfefe7d1d_300

We love the privacy they provide, and that it gives the entire front of our house a cohesive look from the outside.  Still leaving us with a few windows to find coverings for, but after spending over $700 on blinds – we decided to feel out the spaces more before we dropped more dough.

And then we stumbled across an amazing deal! Which you can snag now too! We found this gorgeous gray Sonoma life curtains from Kohls – and with our Kohls member discount, we ended up getting each panel for around $15 instead of $40! We jumped on it! 10 panels and rods later, we now have curtains in our living room, dining room and family room.  SO glad we purchased these.  Curtains really do take a room from “eh” to something to look at!

1640777_Frost_Gray

You to can snag these very curtains for $19 a panel right now!

Last but definitely not least, I have been craving thick striped navy curtains for our boys rooms for ages.  Once I found the perfect and most affordable pair I gobbled them up.

Cabana+Stripe+Drape+Panels

Hello Wayfair! I loved Wayfair long before I was given the opportunity to be a Wayfair Homemaker.  These Nautica Cabana Stripe Drape Panel  are AMAZING in their rooms! I counted down the days of shipping and put them up immediately in their rooms.  I love not only how they look, but how they feel.  A nice thick cotton and keeps the warmth in and the majority of the sun out (great for bedtime!) Plus, two panels for $60! I’ll take it!

I know, I know, Abby where are the pictures of the rooms?!

They are coming! Tomorrow – today I have to take Brody to another follow-up appointment for his Ulcervative Colitis + that takes up a heck of a lot of time.  Send a prayer our way that all goes well!

I will be photographing the rooms after I get a chance to clean! In the mean time, if your windows are begging to be dressed I highly recommend checking these out!

Our favorite pizza dough!

January 20, 2015 by Abby Thome

Our favorite pizza dough!

IMG_2606

While making our favorite pizza dough I could not help but ask myself time and time again, “Why am I just sharing this recipe after all this time?!” Hands down this pizza dough is the better half of me.  My go – to recipe when I want to make a delicious pizza night at home, or whip up my infamous pizza bites for parties.  I could eat pizza, eh, I’ll be kind and say 4 days a week.  Okay, 5.  I love it more than I love myself.

That’s a joke.  But I do love it so.  I found this recipe for this particular pizza dough years ago when researching recipes from an adorable chef I love, Kelsey Nixon.  Her recipes are ones that you can tackle with confidence, knowing that they will turn out.  I love the faith I have when trying something new of hers, her recipes are what a wanna be cooks dreams are made of.

I make this dough a few hours in advance of when I need it.  The prep takes 10 minutes total, letting it rise for an additional 2-2 1/2 hours and it is ready to go.  What if you’re not ready to go? Fear not! Throw it in the fridge even overnight if you have to and it’ll be patiently waiting for your final touches the next day.

This recipe creates the fluffiest pizza dough ever.  Seriously folks, when I make my pizza bites, everyone asks me for the recipe.  I’ll share the pizza bites recipe with you next week.

For now, I guarantee this pizza dough will become a staple in your house!

Thank you to Immaculate Baking Company   for your organic all purpose flour!

Our favorite pizza dough!
Author: Abby Thome
Ingredients
  • 3 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 packets yeast
  • 4 tsp sugar
  • 6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 8 cup Immaculate Baking Company Organic All Purpose Flour
  • 2 tsp salt
Instructions
  1. Place the warm water in a medium size bowl
  2. Add in the yeast and sugar, stir a bit and let sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy
  3. In a large bowl, place the flour and salt inside, stir
  4. After the 5 minutes is up, add the wet to the dry, stirring until combined
  5. I stop after a few stirs and get my hands dirty —
  6. Knead the dough until a ball forms (3-5 minutes)
  7. Spray the bowl with nonstick spray, and pour a smidge of olive oil over the dough ball
  8. Cover the bowl with saran wrap and a towel
  9. Let sit for 2 – 2 1/2 hours until it has tripled in size
  10. Use immediately, or place in fridge, covered for later use
3.2.2802

So with this very batch, it makes enough for 4 medium pizzas or two large pizzas!  You can cut the recipe in half if you’d like!

Monday Makeup Love.

Monday Makeup Love.

{ this post contains affiliate links.  by purchasing items through these thinks, the thome home receives a small commission.  thank you for your support, helping us grow our blog}

I do not have enough fingers or toes to count how many times Dan has looked at me in the morning and asked what the heck I was wearing.  Or just gave me that odd look, thinking “Really babe?” I know exactly what he means though.  All moms can relate.  In the morning rush before school – the kids come first.  Get them up, fed, changed, cleaned up, butts wiped and out the door in the best mood you can achieve.

As for me, I usually roll out of bed, brush  my teeth, jump into whatever covers up my body and head out of the door with a handful of leftover breakfast + toys to entertain Owen in the car pool waiting line.

A lady can only take so many odd looks from her main squeeze before she figures out that she may need to start putting herself on the checklist in the morning.  So those odd looks from Dan mean well, he really just wants to make sure I am taking care of myself to.  So I started.  Making my makeup routine in the morning a must, which in return leaves me feeling amazing for the rest of the day.

Ever since having kiddos, less is more for me.  I would love to dress to impress and have a makeup routine that would leave me looking like jessica alba clone.  Miracles do not happen in the morning here. But, I can tell you I have a few favorite products that I absolutely can not live without.  Some switch up, or get kicked out of the routine depending on the season.  No matter the case, these very products help me go from frumpy to fresh-faced in less than 10 minutes.

My ultimate guide to affordable products that I have grown to love and lean on.

My skin gets SO dry in the fall/winter/early spring months.  Unbearably dry.  Not enough moisturizer/exfoliation can save my pale sensitive skin.

That is until I discovered this amazing combination –

IMG_2794

Ever since my teens I apply a moisturizer with SPF twice daily.  This moisturizer face lotion from Trader Joes is not only gentle on my skin, it provides plenty of moisture to take away my cracked skin.  Add a pea sized amount of aquaphor to a dollop of moisturizer and it is the holy grail to keeping my skin saturated and healthy.  Who knew aquaphor had so many benefits! Honestly, I have noticed the greatest difference in my skin since adding this to my regimen – highly recommend it to those who are feeling the drought this season!

On days when I need a bit extra coverage I use Covergirls BB cream, adding a touch of tint to even out my skin tone and prep for my powder and bronzer.

IMG_2799

Once my skin had a minute to soak in my moisturizer, I use this unbelievable blending sponge for my powder that I just recently started using.  You wet the sponge, squeeze it out and apply the powder as usual.  It provides seemless blending and such a smooth soft finish.  You can use this with powder or liquid foundation.  My bronzer is so basic, applying it with my favorite Aveda brush on my cheeks to liven my face up!

IMG_2800

As for my eyes + lips I like to keep it super simple.  I have never been a big user of eyeshadow, except for weddings maybe.  So I simply use my all time favorite eye liner, Sonia Kashuk.  I have been using this eyeliner for years and will just die a thousand deaths if they take it away.  The only eye liner that stays in place all day, literally.  I use an eyebrow pencil to add depth to my ever light blonde eyebrows, and I love the small brush on the end that helps diffuse the pencil giving my eyebrows just enough.  Mascara for my lashes and a tinted lip sheen for my lips are my finishing touches to pull together an all natural look for the day!

One product that I absolutely adore that I must share with you all, is my lavender doTERRA Oil.

IMG_2797 Not only do I use this on my wrists, but I like to fill up a travel sized water spray bottle and put a drop or two of the lavender essential oil in to add the most luscious scent to my clothes or bedding at night for a peaceful rest!

You can but it here ….

doTERRA Lavender 15 ml

If you really want to get an up close look at my routine, I would totally make a video for you all – let me know!

XoXo – Abby
